Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Dave Carey is throwing his support behind U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski's write-in campaign.
Carey, above, attended the Friday rally in Anchorage, where Murkowski made her announcement while surrounded by supporters chanting: "Run, Lisa, Run!"
The announcement came after the senator lost last month's Republican primary to Joe Miller. Carey said he believes the state can't afford to lose Murkowski's leadership.
"I feel we need her and the expertise and knowledge that she has representing Alaska," Carey said.
Carey is realistic about the effort but was also encouraged by Friday's event, he said.
"No one feels it's going to be an easy task. If I was going to put odds on it there's no question this is an uphill type of task," Carey said. "But people are very energized."
