Kenai edges Homer: SoHi, Skyview blow out foes from Greatland Conference

Posted: Sunday, September 19, 2010

Tyler Glidden ran for 179 yards and two touchdowns to lead Kenai Central past Northern Lights Conference foe Homer 21-16 on Saturday at Ed Hollier Field. Kenai improves to 4-0 in the league and 5-2 overall. The Mariners fall to 1-3 and 3-4.

"He played like an absolute soldier," Kards head coach Jeff Baker said of Glidden. "He was a monster on both sides of the football. He really, really saved us."

Though Kenai didn't have its best game, the Mariners put on an impressive performance, Baker said.

"Homer came to play football," he said. "They really got after us on both sides of the ball."

Hoss Frank led Homer with 147 rushing yards and both touchdowns.

"They played with a lot of emotion," Baker said. "I was really impressed with them."

Kenai committed four turnovers to Homer's three. Both quarterbacks threw two interceptions. Kenai's AJ Hull atoned for his two picks by intercepting Mariners quarterback Ryan Cotney twice.

Heading into the conference championship next week against Soldotna, Baker said his team will have to eliminate those turnovers.

"In order to beat good teams, you got to be able to play mistake-free football," he said.

Stars 50, Ravens 14

Soldotna's Robbie Smithwick rushed for 215 yards and four touchdowns as the Stars cruised to a nonconferece win over Eielson. SoHi improves to 7-0 overall. The Ravens fall to 5-2.

"Robbie had another huge day," Stars head coach Galen Brantley Jr. said. "He just continues to be impressive."

Auston Tennis ran for 133 yards and a touchdown on just six carries. Jared Duncan collected 98 yards on the ground and one touchdown.

"The three of them were just stellar," Brantley Jr. said. "Each one of those players brings something unique to our team."

As a team, SoHi racked up more than 500 yards on the ground.

After Eielson scored twice in the second quarter, Brantley Jr. said he challenged his team to respond in the second half. SoHi did just that, scoring 26 points in the third quarter to put the game away.

Panthers 59, Rams 7

Jasen Suonvieri led Skyview with 202 rushing yards in a nonconference victory over Monroe Catholic. Skyview improves to 5-2 overall while Monroe falls to 1-6.

"Jasen had a monster day," Panthers head coach Eric Pomerleau said.

Quarterback Jordan Jones rushed for two scores and threw for three. Albert White was Jones' favorite target. He collected 44 yards and two touchdowns.

"It was just a great way to have our senior day finish that way," Pomerleau said. "We played really, really well. I'm happy with all aspects of the game."

Pomerleau said Monroe dropped several defenders back to take away Skyview's passing game. But the Rams didn't have an answer for the Panthers' running attack. The offensive line was a major reason for the success on the ground, Pomerleau said.

"We were really good up front today," he said. "We just kept on trucking running the ball."

Skyview's defense held Monroe to just 25 rushing yards and 116 total.

"We looked really strong defensively," Pomerleau said. The linebackers were able to stifle the Rams' run and force several negative yardage plays, he said.

"It was a good win," Pomerleau said. "Even better about the win was our performance. We played well."

Seahawks 16, Huskies 0

Sam Reninger and Jayna O'Leary scored touchdowns as Seward blanked Delta Junction in Greatland Conference action. The Seahawks improve to 2-3 in the conference and 2-5 overall. Delta falls to 1-4 and 1-6.
