Brown Bears win 1, lose 1 at showcase tourney

The Kenai River Brown Bears won on Friday before losing on Saturday at the North American Hockey League Showcase Tournament at Schwans Super Rink in Blaine, Minn.

The Brown Bears finish at 2-2 at the tournament and 3-3 on the season. On Friday and Saturday, the Brown Bears play at the Wenatchee (Wash.) Wild.

On Saturday, the Brown Bears lost 6-3 to the Coulee Region Chill.

Kenai River grabbed a 2-1 lead after one period of play. Chris Rial started the scoring for the Bears when he scored shorthanded on an assist from Brett Lubanski.

After James Hughes tied the game on a power-play goal, Ryan Walker, on assist from Matt Thompson, gave Kenai River the lead with 4 minutes to play in the first.

Coulee Region then took command of the game by scoring the next four goals.

Three of those goals came in the second period, when Kenai River outshot Coulee Region 9-7. The second-period tallies came from Berkely Scott, Aaron Davis and Zac Frischmon.

Midway through the third period, Matt Blomquist scored to move the score to 5-2.

Rial came back with his second goal of the game, on assists from Matt Thompson and Sean Muller, to make it 5-3, but Scott closed out the scoring for the Chill.

Josh Benton made 15 saves for Kenai River, while Aaron Davis had 30 saves for the Chill.

On Friday, Mathias Dahlstrom saved 14 shots to lead the Brown Bears to a 1-0 victory over the Michigan Warriors.

Michigan outshot the Brown Bears in the first period 10-4, but after that it was all Brown Bears. Kenai River outshot the Warriors 11-3 in the second period and 11-1 in the third period en route to a 26-14 advantage for the game.

The Brown Bears got the game winner on the power play 21 seconds into the third period. Doug Beck picked up his third goal and seventh point of the young season, while Erik Persson and Brad Duwe had the assists.

Kenai River finished 1 for 7 on the power play, while Michigan was 0 for 6.
