SOLDOTNA (AP) -- A teenager was recovering from a broken arm, cuts and scrapes after being mauled by a brown bear on a hunting trip near Hope, Alaska State Troopers said.
The 14-year-old boy, whose name was not released, was hunting with his grandfather, 62-year-old Richard Sawyer of Sterling, when the attack occurred.
Troopers say Sawyer told investigators he and the boy were hunting near the Resurrection trail when the bear, estimated at 2 or 3 years old, attacked the boy without warning late Monday afternoon.
Sawyer was not injured and was able to scare the bear away.
The boy was taken to Central Peninsula General Hospital for treatment.
