Kenai celebrates with barbecue

The City of Kenai will be recognizing Scott Hamann, Jacob Carlson and Jacob Pass for their contribution to the enhancement of the Scenic Bluff Overlook at a picnic and barbecue to be held Monday at noon at the Scenic Bluff Overlook located behind Louie's, near the Kenai Senior Center in Kenai.

The event is open to the public.

Kenai plans park upgrade

The public is invited to participate in the first planning meeting for a Municipal Park Playground upgrade, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.

Hospice events announced

* Hospice of the Central Peninsula is hosting a nine-week, free of charge, bereavement support group-for those with any kind of loss. The group will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning Sept. 15. Call 262-0453 for more information.

* Hospice of the Central Peninsula Volunteer training will be held at Christ Lutheran Church in Soldotna on Oct. 19, 21, 23, 26, 28, and 30 from 5 to 9 p.m. except Saturday will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Lifeguard class offered

Nikiski Pool is offering the American Red Cross Lifeguard Class from Sept. 27 through Oct. 1, and Oct. 4 and 5 from 5 to 10 p.m. The cost is $135 or sign up for the T.A.P. program and the fee can be waived.

Classes for early education professionals planned

Thread, Alaska's Child Care Resource and Referral Network, will be offering three trainings on Oct. 2. Topics will include Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), Supportive Environments for Individuals with Autism, and an open forum on Common Childhood Mental Health Disorders. These trainings are being held at The Kenai River Center located at 514 Funny River Road, Soldotna from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Training is $10 each or $30 for all three classes. All community members interested in attending are welcome. Must register prior to training.

Charity hockey game slated

Central Emergency Services and the Fire Explorer's Program are hosting the 5th Annual 2010 Olympic & NHL Alumni Charity Hockey Game on Friday at 4 p.m. at the Soldotna Sports Center. The game will feature Kerry Weiland, Wasilla's 2010 Women's hockey silver medal team winner and NHL alumni and Anchorage Aces coach Brent Thompson. Tickets are available at the gate for $15 for adults and $7.50 for children.

Hockey season upcoming

It's almost hockey time and the "Boys are Back in town." Alaska UAA Seawolves vs. Canada, Windsor Lancers Oct. 2 at the Soldotna Sports Center, sponsored by Tesoro Alaska.

Tickets available for $10 at Lucky Puck, KPC Book store, Instant Replay, Buckets, and The Duck Inn, $12 at the door.

Central Peninsula garden club gatherings

* On Wednesday, Susan Wilsrud Director and co-founder of Calypso Farms & Ecology Center near Fairbanks, will present information on organic, small-scale gardening at 7 p.m. at Kenai Peninsula College Room 109. The lecture is free and open to the public. This event is co-sponsored by the KPC Sustainability Club.

* On Thursday, Wilsrud will present another program on organic gardening focusing on Calypso Farms' involvement with school garden programs at 7 p.m. at the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Building on Kalifornsky Beach Road, near the Bridge Access Road intersection. The event is free and refreshments will be served.

MOMS to meet

The MOMS Club, an international non-profit organization for stay-at-home mothers, will meet Monday at 9:30 a.m.

Dinner fundraiser slated

The Ninilchik Senior Center at Aspen Ave., in Ninilchik will host its annual United Way dinner and pie auction at 5 p.m. Sept. 25 at 5 p.m. The prime rib dinner will cost $20 per person. Advance sign up and payment is recommended due to limited seating.

Teens on target

Teens on Target a firearm safety course for young women will hold an eight-week firearm safety, education and conservation course.

This course is for young women, grades nine through 12th.

Maximum class size will be 12 students. The course begins Sept. 23 to mid-November from 4 to 6 p.m.

The event is sponsored by 4H Shooting Sports, Kenai Chapter of Safari Club and the National Rifle Association.

The Kenai Public Health Center has appointments available for immunizations in Kenai and on Thursday's in Soldotna.

Blood drive slated

Soldotna High School's National Honor Society will host a blood drive Sept. 28 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

You must be 16 years of age or older to donate. Eat, drink plenty of fluids and bring a photo I.D.

La Leche group to meet

The La Leche League of Soldotna and Kenai will meet from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at the Frontier Community Services Playroom in the Red Diamond Center on Kalifornsky Beach Road. The league is a breastfeeding resource group that offers free monthly meetings, mother-to-mother breastfeeding support, telephone assistance and a lending library. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers are invited to attend. Babies are welcome.

All Veterans' picnic slated

A free picnic to honor all who have served in the military will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Kenai Park Strip on Main Street in Kenai. Activities planned are blood pressure checks, live music, VA reps on site to answer questions, door prizes, VAVs representatives, games for children.
