SYDNEY-Augusta rowers Henry Nuzum and Mike Ferry just missed a chance to row for a medal in the men's double sculls Thursday.
They came in fourth in their semifinal race, with the top three boats in each race qualifying for the A finals. The six other boats race for 7th-12th places on Friday.
Nuzum and Ferry were in the more difficult of the two semifinal matches, drawing heavily favored Slovenia, which won the world cup last year, and Hungary. Those teams finished first and third with Germany coming in second.
The Americans were in fourth place almost from the start of the race, and fell behind a little more at each 500-meter split. They were one second behind at 500 meters, three seconds behind at 1,000 meters, six seconds at 1,500 meters and 12 seconds behind at the end. They missed advancing by less than five seconds.
Their time would have been good enough for third place in the other heat, which advanced Norway, Italy and Poland. This was the first Olympic Games for Nuzum and Ferry.
The United States advance two boats to the finals of their events Thursday, the men's coxless pairs and the men's coxless four.
Nuzum and Ferry train at the U.S. Rowing Training Center in Augusta.
