FAIRBANKS (AP) -- Jim Sampson, the former mayor of the Fairbanks North Star Borough, was chosen this week to lead the board of the Alaska Permanent Fund Corp.

Sampson replaces Clark S. Gruening. Eric E. Wohlforth of Anchorage is the new vice chairman.

In a written statement, Sampson said he is looking forward to the coming year and the 25th anniversary of the fund.

Gov. Tony Knowles first appointed Sampson to a four-year term to the board in August 1997. Knowles appointed him to a second four-year term in July.

Sampson served as borough mayor from October 1991 to November 1997. He was appointed state commissioner of labor in 1986, serving through 1990.
