Hydaburg man faces jail after pleading guilty to assault

HYDABURG (AP) -- A Hydaburg man pleaded guilty to assaulting a village public safety officer earlier this week.

Michael Bernhardt, 18, on Wednesday admitted assaulting village public safety officer Joyce Peterson who was responding to a report of an assault. Jimmy Bernhardt, 63, had said his grandson, Michael Bernhardt, had assaulted him at his home on Tuesday.

When Peterson arrived at the home, Michael Bernhardt threw her to the ground, Alaska State Troopers said. She suffered a bruised back and shoulders.

Bernhardt pleaded guilty Wednesday at his arraignment in Craig District Court. He faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 60 days in jail. He is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday.
