Soldotna resident, Mr. John O. Cornell, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010 in Anchorage.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, at Peninsula Memorial Chapel, 5839 Kenai Spur Highway in Kenai. Military honors will be performed by the V.F.W. Post #10046 and American Legion Post #20.
Mr. Cornell was born May 12, 1941, as Jan Olaf Korneliussen in Norway in a small village near the city of Stavanger to his mother and father, Esther and Omer Korneliussen. John grew up there during the German occupation that ended in 1945. He immigrated to Amercia in 1946 with his mother, brother, Fritz and sister, Osa and arrived in Racine, Wisc., where he attended Lutheran Jr. High School and confirmed in that faith.
His mother and family moved to Bellevue, Wash., in 1958, where he completed and graduated from Bellevue High School. He served in the US Army and once discharged became interested in the garden and nursery business that he and a friend started in Redmond, Wash. He later decided that he would move to Alaska and start a new life where he lived for the rest of his years.
Mr. Cornell was preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Omer Korneliussen (Cornell); brother, Fritz; and the love of his life, Molly Nyland; and his step-daughters, Laura Hatten and Maggie Nyland.
He is survived by his sister, Osa and her husband, John W Torgersen and their four daughters, Linda C. Flood , Karen T. Einwalter, Cathy L. Kiel, Lori A. Walker and their families; grandchildren, Samantha Bidwell, Allison Hatten, Chris Nyland, Molly Nyland Kimbrell and Jayden Johnson; cousins in Stavanger, NorwayBjorg Hinna and Kari Abrahamsen and their families.
Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
