Golf Report: Johns wins 2nd straight Atigun Cup; Murray claims Gross Division title

Posted: Wednesday, September 22, 2010

The Atigun Cup playoffs, a season points race competition, was held this past weekend. The competition was very close with many of the matches going into extra holes. In the Net Division, Jeff Johns defeated Kirk Hyman, setting up a showdown in the finals between Jeff and Joe Deveaux. Joe received a bye in the semifinals. Jeff defeated Joe 1-up and then beat Kirk Hyman in extra holes. Jeff claimed his second straight Atigun Cup championship in the Net Division. Congratulations Jeff, Joe and Kirk, the first, second and third place winners. To Mike Kebschull, Mike Houghton and John Glidden, sorry your schedule would not allow you to participate in the playoffs.

In the Gross Division of Atigun playoffs, great competition was on display in all matches. In the first round, Rich Edwards defeated Doug Jung -- the No. 1 seed. Also, Mark Griffin defeated Chris Morin, Gordon Griffin defeated Greg Harrington and Chris Murray defeated Tommy Carver.

In the second round, Rich Edwards defeated Mark Griffin in extra holes and Chris Murray defeated Gordon Griffin 1-up. This set up a very exciting final match between Rich Edwards and Chris Murray. Mark Griffin and Gordon Griffin would play for third and fourth. Mark defeated Gordon on the first extra hole in a playoff. Murray and Edwards finished 18 holes all square. They tied on hole No. 1 with pars. On the second extra hole, Chris Murray won the Gross Division with a par. I really enjoyed seeing such great competition. Congratulations to Chris for playing so well. Congratulations also to Rich for his great play.

I would like to thank Bob Sizemore and Atigun for being the major sponsor for this even the past two years. We appreciate your involvement very much. The competition will continue next year. If you would like to be involved, please contact the clubhouse.

* Thanks to everyone who played at the Kenai Golf Course this season. Your encouragement and support is much appreciated and is the primary reason that we can continue to improve the course each year. With your help, we will continue this process over the winter months and into next season.

I would like to thank all our workers and volunteers for a job well done throughout the season. I have received many positive comments about your work and how great the course looks and plays.

* We still have a couple weeks left in the season. Come out and get in those last few rounds.

As always, see you on the course. Thanks for a great season.
