Bessie Leona Hooks
Kenai resident Bessie Leona Hooks died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, of natural causes at her home in Kenai. She was 72.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., today, Sept. 23, at Peninsula Memorial Chapel, 5839 Kenai Spur Highway, in Kenai. Additional funeral services will be held at the Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee, Texas, and she will be laid to rest with her family at the Cunningham Cemetery.
Mrs. Hooks was born April 5, 1932, in New Orleans. She moved to Kenai in July 2003 to be closer to her son, Winston, and his family.
"Leona loved being in Alaska with her son and family. She was active in the Kenai Senior Citizens Center and recently joined the bell choir, which she enjoyed very much," her family said.
Mrs. Hooks is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Winston and Pam Gillies of Kenai; granddaughter, Tonya Silk of Kenai; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Mark and Shawna Gillies of Nikiski; great-grandchildren, Victoria Silk, Max, Ireland and Chase Gillies, Dylan Jackson and Tessa and Holly Lewis; sister and brother-in-law, Beatrice and Bill Jannise of China, Texas; nieces, Diana McCullough and her husband, Frank, and Luzena Dionne and her husband, Ellis; and many great-nieces and -nephews.
Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
