Kenai, Homer win on gridiron; Seward, Nikiski lose

Posted: Sunday, September 23, 2007

Senior Bill Chimphalee scored four touchdowns as Kenai easily defeated the East High School jayvee team, 62-0, at Kenai Central High School on Saturday.

"At times we did some things well. We improved on some things we talked about that we wanted to improve on," said Kenai coach Jim Beeson. "We played better than the week before and I guess that's important.

"Defensively we did a much better," he added. "They didn't hurt us throwing the football near as much as I thought they might."

Chimphalee, who now has a state best 1,899 yards and 31 rushing touchdowns, opened the scoring with three touchdowns (29, 79 and 43 yards) spanning the first and second quarters.

Cody Booth then got into the action with a 4-yard TD run before Chimphalee who racked up 262 yards on 18 carries scored his fourth of the day on a 47-yard scamper.

Booth later added two more scores (2-yard run, 20-yard return on a blocked punt), Zach Rabung ran 27 yards for a TD and Justin Hensler capped the scoring with a 12-yard jaunt in the fourth quarter.

The Kardinals improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Northern Lights Conference and now face their toughest challenge of the season when Soldotna comes to town on Saturday at 2 p.m.

"The bottom line is we've got to try to figure out a way to slow down Soldotna and just make it a competitive football game," Beeson said. "It's been a while since they've been in one of those."

Homer 45, Delta 21

The Mariners turned a 7-7 game into a 38-7 rout with three second-quarter touchdowns in topping the visiting Huskies in a nonconference matchup.

David Craig staked Homer (4-3 overall) to a 7-0 lead when he ran in from nine yards out, but Delta's Marshall Brown answered with a 53-yard TD scamper of his own.

The Mariners then exploded.Gordon Parker found Justin Frink for an 11-yard TD hookup, Brady Quinn scored on a 3-yard run, Dean DeVaney returned an interception 28 yards to the end zone and Mark Walsworth added an 11-yard field goal and Homer quickly owned a 31-7 advantage at halftime.

Parker later found Corey Sutherland for a 27-yard touchdown and Jeremiah Carr capped Homer's scoring with a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter.
