Brown Bears drop 2 on road

Posted: Sunday, September 23, 2007

The Kenai River Brown Bears' troubles on the road continued with the a pair of losses on Friday and Saturday.

The Brown Bears were outshot 33-22 in falling 9-1 to the Springfield Jr. Blues on Friday and then fell to the Marquette Rangers, 7-4, on Saturday.

After capturing their first win of the season in the franchise opener at home, Kenai River has lost six straight since, including four on the road.

On Friday, Springfield jumped in front 2-0 before Nick Simson made it a one-goal game when he scored with 6:48 to play in the first.

From there, though, it all went downhill.

The Blues ran off seven unanswered goals, beating Kenai goaltender Steven Madej, who denied 24 of the 33 shots he faced.

Saturday started out more promising.

The Brown Bears (1-6) took a 1-0 lead behind a Scott Deur goal only 1:07 into the contest, but Marquette scored three times before the end of the frame for a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.

The Rangers led 6-1 before Kenai scored again, a power-play tally by Simson at the 15:20 mark of the second and Jeffrey Harris followed that with a goal of his own at the 19-minute mark, cutting the deficit to 6-3. But Marquette managed to find the back of the net again with only 27 seconds remaining in the period.

Spencer Alvarez took his turn in net for Kenai on Saturday and turned away 33 of 40 shots.

The Brown Bears continue their road trip when they travel to the North Iowa Outlaws on Friday and Saturday.
