ANCHORAGE (AP) -- There were 50,048 students enrolled in classes in the Anchorage School District Sept. 16, the first time the district has passed the 50,000 mark.
The figure was nearly 100 more kids than officials had projected.
The district estimates that 50,100 students will be enrolled by Monday, the official day for the count that determines state school aid.
Elementary schools have fewer students enrolled this year, but student populations grew at middle and high schools. Middle schools reported 7,760 kids, 181 more than the official count a year ago. High schools had 12,916 students enrolled, 359 more than last year's total.
