As we head into our first series with the Wenatchee (Wash.) Wild of the 2010-11 season, we are looking forward. If we looked back, well, nothing good would come of it, and even if we found something good, we couldn't do anything about it anyway. It's over.
Last season's lessons have been learned and our 2010-11 Brown Bears are eager to make a statement here this weekend. We are here as a team. We are here to compete. We are here to continue learning and developing into a hockey team, a team of which we have become very proud. A team not many will know much about, but a team hopefully our fans and potential fans will be proud to support.
Make no mistake about it, facing the Wild is a test. Pick your cliche: David vs. Goliath, any team in Major League Baseball facing the Yankees or the Red Sox. We are up against a great club here this weekend. That said, it is our first chance to show we mean business and we are prepared. We want to get after it.
In my opinion, what matters most is that we have a group that understands that in order to reach our goals, challenging ourselves to be our best each weekend is the goal. If we can achieve this, we will be where we want to be come March. It's early, but this test is a big one.
No matter the level at which you are competing, when facing a team you haven't had much success against, preparation is key. When you prepare well, practice hard, work out hard and eat well, you will gain confidence in knowing you have prepared for the challenge. When you have confidence heading into a big game, you give yourself a chance to be at your best.
Remember, "The best players don't always win, but those that play the best most always do. " -- Lou Holtz
Prepare with good work, play with confidence and you give yourself a chance to be the best -- the best you can be.
