Man awaits trial on lewd photo charge

JUNEAU (AP) -- A 76-year-old man was arrested after photographs of unconscious and nude women were found inside his wallet lost on the Douglas Bridge, Juneau police said.

Joseph Harris is charged with three counts of misdemeanor indecent viewing or photography.

Harris pleaded innocent Sept. 19. His trial is set for November.

The wallet was discovered Aug. 5 and turned in to the Juneau Police Department, police said.

When employees inventoried the contents of the wallet, they discovered four photographs of nude women who appeared incapacitated, Officer Terry Allen told the Juneau Empire.

The women were identified and police obtained a search warrant of Harris's home, where they found similar photos apparently taken between 1989 and March 2000, Allen said.

''He was only charged with three counts of indecent viewing, though, for the three most recent photos because the statute of limitations had run out for the others,'' Allen said.

The women interviewed said that they had suffered from alcohol problems at the time the photos were taken. Police said Harris gave the women alcohol, took them back to his house and photographed them after they fell asleep.

There was no allegation of sexual contact but the photos demonstrate that the women were photographed without their consent or knowledge, Allen said.

All but one of the women interviewed by police objected to their pictures being taken, Allen said.

Harris faces up to one year in prison and a $5,000 fine for each count.
