Conference to provide teachers extra training

Posted: Wednesday, September 25, 2002

Teachers from throughout the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District will converge in Cooper Landing this weekend for an ASLA Literacy Retreat.

Internationally recognized speakers Ellin Keene and Ralph Fletcher will present key sessions.

Keene will present a workshop on reading comprehension. She is the author of "Mosaic of Thought: Teaching Reading Comprehension in a Readers Workshop," and "I Read It, But I Don't Get It: Comprehension Strategies for Adolescent Readers."

Fletcher, also an accomplished author, will offer a workshop on how teachers can help develop student's writing skills. His book credits include, "Craft Lessons," "Nonfiction Craft Lessons," "Writing Workshop: The Essential Guide," "A Writers Notebook: Unlocking the Writer Within You," "How Writers Work: Finding a Process that Works for You," and several children's fiction books.

Between classes, teachers will have the opportunity to form discussion groups and brainstorm ways to implement the new knowledge in the classroom.

All participants will leave the conference with implementation plans and a new set of focused instructional strategies.

The conference runs from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon at the Kenai Princess Lodge in Cooper Landing.

Teachers who attend the conference not only have the opportunity to further their classroom skills, but also will be eligible for college credit for attendance.

Attendees must cover the cost of the conference on their own.
