One day became Friday for Seward senior Jacqueline Van Driessche.

Van Driessche set three new records at Soldotna High School Friday to win her third straight Soldotna Pentathlon.

"I remember watching Abby Kiffmeyer and Jenna Syverson and saying, 'Man, one day I'd like to break records like they do,'" Van Driessche said. "It's weird now that people are thinking about me up on that same pedestal."

This was the 27th year of the Soldotna Pentathlon. In the event, competitors swim a 100-yard individual medley, 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle. At the end of the meet, times for all the events are added up to determine placements. The top 16 swimmers for the boys and girls determine team scores.

Van Driessche broke the 100 individual medley, the 50 breaststroke and the overall time records. In the 100 individual medley, Van Driessche finished in 1:00.82 to defeat Soldotna graduate Syverson's 2002 mark of 1:02.01. In the 50 breaststroke, Van Driessche finished in 31.90 to break her own 2003 mark of 32.20. Van Driessche's total time in the event was 2:53.97, easily eclipsing the 2:57.58 mark Van Driessche put up in 2003.

The Seward senior, who won state titles in the 100 breaststroke as a sophomore and the 50 freestyle as a junior, now has three Pentathlon records, while Soldotna graduate Kiffmeyer has two and Syverson retains one.

"I'm definitely a sprinter and this is my favorite meet of the year, except for regions and state," Van Driessche said. "I like the adrenaline rush of sprints, and you get that five times here."

Van Driessche said she is not sure why she didn't break any records in winning last year. She said having Soldotna senior Eve Green, who finished second with a total time that was 10 seconds behind Van Driessche, swimming next to her helped her go faster.

"At the beginning of the season, I wasn't sure what was going on," Van Driessche said. "I wasn't sure how I'd do at state. This meet has definitely given me a boost."

While Van Driessche won every race, Green overcame an allergy she has to chlorine and took second in three of the five races.

"Jacqueline is awesome," Green said. "I'm happy to have gotten second."

The boys title was won by Homer senior Kevin Wythe. Wythe had a total time of 2:45.07 while Kenai Central senior Landon Mishler, the runner-up, finished at 2:49.24.

Wythe said he would have loved to take a crack at the boys Pentathlon records. The records were all set in 2000, when Soldotna graduate Lucas Petersen set five and Soldotna graduate Joshua Gemmell set one. However, Wythe is struggling with shoulder injuries and just started swimming with the team full time on Monday.

Wythe won the 50 backstroke, 50 butterfly and 100 individual medley in picking up his first Pentathlon title.

"If it would have been longer races, I would not have been able to do it," Wythe said.

Mishler won the 50 freestyle. The key race between the two was the backstroke, where Wythe won by more than two seconds.

"That was weird for me, because I'm not a very good backstroker," Wythe said. "I've been swimming for 15 years, though, so being able to do it comes with how long I've been doing it for."

Homer coach Andrew Foley said Wythe was able to win the event with such little practice because only one or two swimmers in the state are more talented than Wythe. Soldotna coach Sohail Marey respects Wythe so much that as soon as he saw Wythe was entered in the Pentathlon, he knew he'd win even with the little time spent in the pool.

"I'd like to thank my teammates for their support," Wythe said. "They gave me a huge confidence boost."

With so many racers swimming so many races, the Pentathlon is a long meet. Thus, teammates and friends can help pass the time.

Mishler said Kenai teammate Christopher Hall and Soldotna swimmer Quinn Bennett helped him to second by helping him pass the time. The Kenai Central senior also said he was able to post his best finish at the Pentathlon thanks to practice.

"I swam year-round heading into this season," Mishler said. "Last year, I only swam during the season."

The Soldotna girls and the Homer boys took the team titles. The Soldotna girls scored 41 points to defeat Homer by one point. Marey said he was surprised when he first heard his girls had won. Coming in, he knew it would take a monumental effort from his girls to secure the win.

"This is traditionally a Soldotna meet. We held it here for 27 years," Marey said. "These girls didn't want to give it up."

The Homer boys scored 49 points while the runner-up SoHi boys scored 29 points.

SoHi girls, Kodiak boys take Skyview Invite

The Soldotna girls and Kodiak boys picked up team titles Saturday at the Skyview Invitational.

The Soldotna girls scored 89 points to defeat Kodiak by 22. The Kodiak boys scored 99 points to defeat Wasilla by 31.

The Soldotna girls were led by Eve Green, who won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 freestyle. Kodiak's Naomi Beck-Goodell and Seward's Jacqueline Van Driessche also won multiple individual events. Beck-Goodell won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly while Van Driessche won the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Ryan Bateman and Jeremy Zimmer each won a pair of events for Kodiak. Bateman won the 200 and 500 freestyles, while Zimmer won the 50 and 100 freestyles.

In an 11-dive competition, Colony's Emily Whitsine had 323.15 points to defeat runner-up Sasha Porter of Soldotna and her 310.55 points. For the boys, Kenai's Andy Knowles won with 272.55 points, while Ryan Hogan of Wasilla was second with 265.50.
