KODIAK (AP) -- Thousands of fish were found dead Tuesday in Manashak Bay on Kodiak Island, the Department of Environmental Conservation said.
The Coast Guard and the Department of Fish and Game reported the fish kill to DEC Monday afternoon. They said the fish numbered between 5,000 and 6,000 and included sculpin, Pacific sand lance and Dolly Vardens.
DEC spokesman Charles Fedullo said there were reports that the water in the vicinity of the fish kill was murky and a chocolate brown color on Monday.
The agency is advising residents not to eat any fish from the area until they know what killed them.
