Homer resident James Spencer Evans died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at his home. He was 68.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Homer Elks Lodge No. 2127.
Mr. Evans was born March 8, 1934, in McKittrick, Calif. He graduated from high school and obtained a bachelor of science degree in wildlife management. He moved to Alaska in 1962, residing in Anchorage. He worked for the Bureau of Land Management. In 1970, he began working for Homer Electric Association. He worked with HEA until retiring in 1991.
Mr. Evans was a member of the Homer Elks Lodge No. 2127, where he was a Past Exalted Ruler, and Pioneers of Alaska Igloo No. 32. He enjoyed sports, including golf and bowling. He also enjoyed scuba diving, playing chess and being with his family.
"We take comfort in the knowledge that his legacy will continue through the generations. To be around James S. Evans was like being around a fire that ensured warmth, security, protection and guidance. We will always feel the loss of his fire. He always made work fun and knew how to enjoy life," his family said.
Mr. Evans is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joan; children, Laurie Anne Slate, Sandra Ruth Arndt, Robert Francis Evans and James Gowell Evans; grandchildren, Anne Marie Slate, Justin Grady Slate, Brandon Spencer Slate, Joelene Nicole Arndt, Benjamin Wade Arndt, Seth Thomas Arndt, Samantha Rochelle Arndt, and Robert Valeriy Evans; sister, Jean Aldridge and her husband, George; brothers, Robert B. and Wiliam M. Evans and his wife, Phyllis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Homer Elks Lodge No. 2127 Scholarship Fund, 215 Jenny Lane, Homer, AK 99603.
