Area needs emergency plan

Posted: Tuesday, September 27, 2005

Thanks for letting me explain a little about myself, and the issues that are of concern to me.

My name is Heidi. I have been married for 19 years now to What's His Name. I have six offspring. My oldest son, Chris, graduated this last spring from high school; he's just completed his Eagle Scout project. He's an aspiring novel writer and he's interested in flying helicopters. He's part of a local business management team and is a referee for Pop Warner football. My second son, Michael, enjoys football and baseball and yes, even class work. He's interested in becoming a doctor. Stefanie, my oldest daughter, talks way too much and is involved in the high school football program. Brian is 12 and he's into being cool at school; he seems to be putting forth a better effort this year to improve his grades. Laura, my youngest daughter, is a socialite. She enjoys school and Pop Warner cheerleading. The youngest is Shane; he's an all-American boy.

I am currently a substitute for the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. I have done many things for the school district. Everything from custodian, working the night shift at the high school, to teacher aide for special needs students, and also working as a cashier in cafeterias. The only job I ever turned down was dusting off the top of the killer whale hanging from the rafters at Homer High, (sorry, no can do). I have seen a marvelous group of individuals attending to the needs of the children at school. I am a part-time custodian at a local church. I try to balance my life with civic, religious, social and personal activities. I am an artist. I am usually in the middle of a project of some sort. I am really a shy person, but I would be willing to accept the position of assemblyperson and step up and be heard. There are men and women at war at this very moment, defending the rights of individuals and society to function by the voice of the people. I would like to honor them by speaking up and being one voice of the people, representing many.

I believe we should have an excellent emergency plan for our area, especially after the hurricane in the South. It is really upsetting to watch the lives turned upside down. We live in an area where we could become isolated by any number of situations. We should as individuals and as a society prepare ourselves with a sound contingency plan when such a disaster should befall this community.

I don't plan on spending hard-earned money on campaigning. I try to use common sense in my decisions. I'm used to working on a budget, and use my cents as wisely as possible. I have a wide variety of concerns, I am interested in so many different aspects in life and living and living well. If elected I will just do some rearranging. Thank you.
