Former Seward resident Paul Thomas Whitaker died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010 in Bristow, Okla., of esophageal cancer. He was 71.
Mr. Whitaker was cremated. His ashes will be spread by family in Alaska and Washington.
Mr. Whitaker was born Oct. 10, 1938 in Boerne, Texas, to Arline Grose and Paul Whitaker. He married Emma Lee Whitaker on Jan. 15, 1986 in Seward. Mr. Whitaker was a musician, worked on the 1989 Valdez oil spill, and at the Seward resort on ground maintenance before retiring. He served in the Army from 1955 to 1957.
His family wirtes, "If Love could save you , you would have lived forever. Songs you sang will be remembered always.
"Tom loved Alaska, hunting and fishing, enjoyed playing music for friends and his family. He was a carpenter extraordinaire made beautiful porches and furniture."
Mr. Whitaker was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Sandy and Peggy; and brothers Nolan Whitaker and Bobby Joe Mathews.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, one daughter, five grandchildren; and stepchildren including five daughters, one son, 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
