FAIRBANKS (AP) -- BP is teaming up with the University of Alaska Fairbanks to sponsor the Top of the World Classic preseason college basketball tournament.
BP will provide $375,000 over five years to support the tournament, Jeremiah Bartz, UAF's sports information assistant, said Thursday.
''It will help significantly,'' Bartz said. ''It is a huge contribution.''
Jim Palmer, vice president of external affairs for BP in Alaska, said the company is proud to sponsor the tournament.
''It's a top-quality event. Our sponsorship is part of an effort to show our long-term partnership with the people of Fairbanks and the University of Alaska.''
UAF Chancellor Marshall Lind said BP's sponsorship will provide stability and long-term financial support to the tournament, which is in its fifth year.
''This is a wonderful development in the history of our tournament,'' Lind said.
