Students suspended after videotaped brawls

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A videotape seized after a traffic accident captured three brawls near West High School and led to the suspension of 16 students, Anchorage School District officials said Friday.

At least three students are being recommended for expulsion and more could be suspended, said West High principal Jim Bailey.

One fight shows two boys punching each other as two groups of teenagers and a few unidentified adults yell in the background. The fight appears to have taken place Wednesday.

Police identified the 15- and 16-year-old boys involved and charged them with disorderly conduct.

Administrators learned about two of the fights from students. They learned about the third fight by watching the tape.

Police recovered the tape Thursday at a traffic accident in which a sport utility vehicle carrying seven teenagers flipped in Midtown Anchorage.

They made a connection between a fight recorded on the tape and two calls regarding a fight the day before at West High.
