Polling places moved off bases near Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS (AP) -- Polling places at Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base will be moved to non-military locations for Tuesday's election because of heightened security at the installations.

The Eielson precinct has been moved to Moose Creek, while Wainwright votes will now be cast at Tanana Middle School. Both locations are close to the usual military precincts.

The two military precincts are by far the largest in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. As of Sept. 4, Fort Wainwright had 6,391 registered voters, while Eielson tallied 5,244. That's about 17 percent of the borough's total voting population.

Mona Drexler, the Fairbanks North Star Borough clerk and chief of local municipal elections, said that if the change is inconvenient for military personnel and their dependents, absentee voting is an alternative.
