Cold Weather Classic a blast

Birch Ridge Report

As our roving reporter, June Stuckey is working hard trying to get her deck finished for winter, she has transferred this responsibility to yours truly, Pat Cowan.

The last tournament of the year, the Cold Weather Classic, a man and woman Scotch twosome, was played on Birch Ridge Golf Course on Saturday. This is Pat and Myrna Cowan’s favorite tournament.

If you’re a golfing couple and have not tried this tournament, you should consider it for 2006. It’s a blast. Although it was a cold and blustery day, 42 golfers showed up to compete.

Mike and Tanna Chenault tied with Gary Dawkins and Paula Crowley for low gross with scores of 80. The Chenaults were awarded low gross, while Dawkins and Crowley won low net with a total of 60. Earl and Ann Frawner tied with Roy Bird and Ardie Crawford for second low gross. Each had totals of 65. Taking low net with a total of 63 were Pat and Myrna Cowan. Complete scores appear at the bottom of this article.

All contests were set up for couples. There were five skins recorded, as follows: Hole No. 1 — Gary Dawkins and Paula Crowley (birdie); Hole No. 7 — Earl and Ann Frawner (birdie); Hole No. 8 — Scott and Jessica Sundberg (birdie); Hole No. 12 — Roy Bird and Ardie Crawford (birdie); and Hole No. 16 — Mike and Tanna Chenault (par).

The closest-to-the-pin awards went to Don McGhee and Dee Richards on No. 6, Scott and Jessica Sundberg on No. 8, Dan and Linda Murphy on No. 15 and Tanya Boedeker and Mick Reeve on No. 17.

On Sept. 21, eight men competed in a two-man scramble format for Men’s Night. Two teams tied for first — Gary Effenbeck and Roy Bird, and Gene Friendshuh and George McDowell. Gene Friendshuh was closest to the pin on No. 6 and Steve Hammarstrom was closest on No. 8.

On Sept. 26, eight seniors competed with an individual low net format. Roger Jones was first with a 43, net 32, and second place went to Mark Hutton with a 44, net 33. Closest to the pin went to Roger Jones on No. 6 and Darell Jelsma on No. 8.

The seniors are still playing on Monday mornings with tee-off times at 10 a.m. and the men are still playing Men’s Night on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. Gary Effenbeck has volunteered his time to coordinate both of these events. Thank you Gary for your help, but we don’t want to forget Gordon and Jo Briscoe (Senior League) and Bob Sizemore (Men’s Night) for coordinating those events all of the 2005 golfing season.

Birch Ridge Golf Course will stay open until Mother Nature (God) shuts us down with either snow or a hard frost. We will be working the greens all this week and will be playing the fronts of the greens for the rest of the season, so that those folks keeping track of their handicaps can still register those scores.

Finally, we at Birch Ridge Golf Course would like to thank our community of golfers along with the visitors who have taken advantage of the facilities at Birch Ridge during 2005. The owners, staff and volunteers of the Birch Ridge Golf Course are honored to be able to provide the facilities that support our community’s efforts to provide over $20,000 to assist our local charities, nonprofits and junior golfers to achieve their goals.

We would like to publicly thank all of our sponsoring organizations — Wells Fargo of Alaska, Mike Chenault, Qwick Construction, The American Red Cross, Kenai Peninsula District, The Soldotna Rotary, Local Hospice Organization, The Soldotna Elks Club, The Seward Seahawks Booster Club, the Ninilchik Native Dissidents Organization and the Birch Ridge Golf Association for their dedication and work to make these donations possible.
