Petersburg man missing, boat found

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Rescuers launched a search for a Petersburg man who disappeared after setting out on a trip from Wrangell, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers were notified Saturday morning that Keith Kvernvik was overdue.

Kvernvik, 41, had apparently gone to Wrangell from his home and was on his way back, troopers said.

The Wrangell Search and Rescue group chartered an airplane to check for Kvernvik, and spotted his 18-foot boat floating near a cabin 7 1/2 miles northwest of Wrangell.

Rescuers, however, found no one in the boat or the cabin. They found the main engine was damaged. Kvernvik's rifle, clothes, food and a broken oar were in the boat.

The Coast Guard and troopers also joined in the search.
