Rezone on ballot

Kenai voters are being asked to decide the fate of a referendum on the rezoning of land along the Kenai Spur Highway.

The Kenai City Council in April voted to rezone 14 lots along the north side of the Kenai Spur Highway, across from Kenai Central High School, from Rural Residential 1 to Limited Commercial.

The intent of the Limited Commercial designation, according to the city, is to provide a transition from the city's residential neighborhoods to commercial areas. Proponents of the measure say restrictions in the zoning regulations would protect the adjacent neighborhood.

Residents in the neighboring MAPS subdivision protested the zoning change and have said it will negatively impact the character of their neighborhood. They organized the petition drive to have rezone issue go to the voters as a ballot measure.

Proposition A reads: "Shall City of Kenai Ordinance No. 2393-2009, that amaneded the Official Kenai Zoning Map by rezoning approximately 22 acres located North of the Kenai Spur Highway from McCollum Drive West to No-Name Creek from Rural Residential 1 (RR1) and Conservation (C) to Limited Commercial (LC), be repealed?"

A yes vote repeals the zoning change, returning the parcels in question to Rural Residential 1.

A no vote leaves the zoning change to Limited Commercial in place.
