FAIRBANKS (AP) -- A 17-year-old girl died during surgery after a head-on collision Saturday on the Old Steese Highway, Alaska State Troopers said.

A 1987 GMC pickup truck slid on an icy patch into the oncoming lane and hit a 1991 4-door Toyota driven by Heather Dowdy about 3 p.m., trooper Sgt. Tim Schoenberg said.

Dowdy, who suffered numerous injuries, was pronounced dead at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. The driver of the truck, 32-year-old Kirk Jackson, suffered facial fractures and was in good condition at Fairbanks Memorial.

Roads were extremely icy after snow fell in the area Friday. Dozens of abandoned vehicles could be seen around town Saturday on roadsides and in ditches, some upside down.

Sally Pelno, co-owner of Klondike Auto Repair and Towing, said her husband did four or five tows Saturday.

''For us, it's a lot,'' Pelno said.
