Assembly candidates share views: John C. Davis, District 1

Posted: Thursday, October 02, 2003

The Kenai Peninsula Borough is beyond a doubt the best place on earth to live, work, play and raise a family. After 36 years of doing just that, I am offering my services to my friends, neighbors and the voters of District 1 to serve as their representative on the borough assembly for another term.

It's been a great experience to see the Kenai Peninsula grow from a very small population with only limited government services in 1968 to the robust and healthy community it has become today. Serving on the borough assembly from 1972 to 1982, the last year as assembly president, and then again this past year, has truly been a very rewarding and gratifying experience. Working to see continued growth of our peninsula and limiting the growth of government to an absolute minimum, will be a continuing challenge, and I am willing to give that challenge my time, work and efforts.

Personally, I have raised nine kids during our 36 years here in Kenai-Soldotna. My wife, Mary Jo, and I have 18 kids who call us Grandad and Grandma, and we enjoy them very much.

I have spent most of my life working with small business men and women here on the peninsula, helping them to grow their businesses with radio. I am president of three corporations: KSRM Inc., Soldotna Business Plaza Inc. and Lake Country Air Inc.

As a pilot and registered big game guide, I have flown for many thousands of hours all over Alaska, building and operating Lake Country Lodge on Lake Clark for many years. I have lived in District 1 since 1978.

It is my belief that our Kenai Peninsula Borough is one of the most efficiently operated municipalities of the state. Our property taxes are only 6.5 mills, down from a high of 8.3 mills and this, in spite of the fact that we have increased our road maintenance and improvement budget by more than 150 percent in the past three years and that we are one of only three boroughs in the state that fully fund our school district.

Hopefully, we can continue to do that in the future.

I will work to dispose of borough land selections on a regular basis, including land in both Cooper Landing and on Point Possession during the next year. I believe that having a consistent annual policy that gets government land into private ownership and on the tax rolls is healthy for our borough.

It's my belief that I have the experience, energy and desire to do a good job for District 1, and your vote and support of my candidacy to be your borough assemblyman would be appreciated and accepted with humble gratitude.
