Library pumpkin contest slated
The Soldotna Public Library is sponsoring a pumpkin carving and painting contest. The contest goes until Nov. 1. Entries must represent a fictional book character. One prize will be awarded in four categories: preschool, elementary, teens and family. A grand prize will be awarded for Best in Contest. Painted pumpkins can be dropped off from Saturday until Oct. 28. Carved pumpkins can be dropped off from Oct. 24 to 28.
Judging and awards will be given Oct. 28. Entries dropped off at the library must be ready for display. Entries should include a 3-inch-by-5-inch card with the name of character, title and author of the book the character is from.
The back of the card should have the participant's name, mailing address, phone number and category the item is entered in.

KPBSD budget meetings slated
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District will hold budget hearings on the following dates and times: Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Little Theater at Kenai Central High School; Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Homer High School library; Oct. 17 in Soldotna (call for time); Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Seward High School library; and Nov. 7 from 6 to 6:45 p.m. in Homer in conjunction with the scheduled school board meetings. Meetings are open to the public.

Immunization clinic canceled
The regular Kenai Public Health Center immunization clinic scheduled Thursday at Cottonwood Health Clinic in Soldotna has been canceled. A walk-in immunization clinic will be held at the Kenai Public Health Center in Kenai at 630 Barnacle Way, suite A the same day from 1:30 to 4 p.m. The regular clinic schedule will be in effect after that date. Senior center to hold meeting

Scouting books, uniforms sought
The Cub Scout Pack 654 and Boy Scout Troop 659 of Nikiski are seeking scouting books and uniforms (new or used) for Hurricane Katrina victims.
The drive is being held in conjunction with Houston (Texas) Pack 197.

Popcorn fund-raiser begins
Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in the Tustumena District of the Western Alaska Council are selling Trails End popcorn to earn money to help purchase uniforms, fund activities and pay for camp.

Pool available during school hours
The Soldotna High School pool hours and events are as follows: Morning lap swim from 6 to 8:30 a.m. and 10 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday; evening lap swim from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; and open swim from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
