Vegetarian potluck planned

A vegetarian potluck dinner will be held in honor of International Vegetarian Day and Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday at 6 p.m. today at the Baha’i Center at 44830 Knight Drive in Soldotna. For more information, call Mary Jo at 262-5447.

Basketball camp set to shoot

Soldotna All-star basketball camp will be held Thursday through Friday at the following locations:

· Elementary camps — Redoubt Elementary School, for youth in grades three and four from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday and youth in grades five and six from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday;

· Junior high camps — Soldotna Middle School youth in grades seven and eight from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday; and

· High school camps — Soldotna High School for youth in grades nine through 12 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday.

Camps will be lead by Frank Ostanik, men’s head basketball coach at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Registration forms available at Soldotna High School’s Web site at www.edline.net/pages/Soldotna_High/School_ Info.

Depression screening available

Central Peninsula General Hospital and Central Peninsula Counseling Service will offer free and confidential depression screenings from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday in the commons at Kenai Peninsula College. Mental health professionals will screen and make appropriate referrals. For more information, call 714-4521.

Prime rib dinner, auction fundraiser slated

The 12th annual Thelma McConnell Scholarship prime rib dinner and auction fundraiser will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Nikiski Community Recreation Center. The auction will begin at 7 p.m. Outcry, silent and Chinese auctions, door prizes, raffles and rippies are some of the planned events. Participants must be present to win. The cost of admission is $15 for adults or $10 for children 10 and under.

Take a Break to meet

Peninsula Take a Break a Christian women’s group will meet for a wacky tacky luncheon from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Oct. 18 at Solid Rock conference center at Mile 90.5 on the Sterling Highway.

Participants are invited to dress up for the tackiest outfit contest. Penny Gottsche will provide the music, a presentation from the Women’s Auxiliary of Central Peninsula General Hospital will be given and Linda Luberger will be the featured speaker. NRA fundraiser takes aim

The Friends of the NRA will host its annual banquet and auction at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Challenger Learning Center of Alaska in Kenai. Proceeds will be given to groups to promote firearm safety on the peninsula. Tickets are available at Gator Guns, The Impact Area or by calling 776-7676.
