City council service is a learning experience

I have considered the Kenai/Soldotna area home since I was 6 years old. As a State Trooper, I have the freedom to live anywhere in the State, but because of the quality of life offered, my wife and I chose to make our home in Soldotna and to raise our children here. In the last few years I have become increasingly interested in what is happening in the City and in the city government. I began to take an active interest and attended several city council meetings.

I had the opportunity to serve on the Soldotna Unified Community Memorial Park Committee. When Councilman Horan announced he was stepping down from the city council, I began to think about the position. I spoke with the mayor and several council members and decided that I would apply for the vacant council seat. I believe in public service and was excited to perhaps have the opportunity to serve. I was quite surprised that I was the only candidate to express an interest.

I was appointed to the Soldotna City Council, Seat B in July of this year. Since that time I have learned a great deal. One of the things I've learned is how much information a councilmember must try to understand before voting on an issue. I appreciate how different the councilmembers' approach an issue. But that is part of what makes the process work and ensures that all voices are heard. Despite having differing viewpoints, it seems that after the council has made a decision, we move forward together to ensure successful implementation.

I chose to run for the Soldotna City Council because I am willing to give of my time and effort to serve the City. I always try to do what's best for the good of the City first in all of my votes and decisions. I will continue to be a dedicated and positive influence on the council to help keep Soldotna a wonderful place to live and raise a family.

I am not about just one issue and no one had to convince me to run for office. There are many issues that are coming before the council that still need to be addressed. I would appreciate the opportunity to represent the City of Soldotna by being elected on October 6th. I have the skills and the commitment and would be honored to serve.
