City council should listen to vote of people
I have been a resident of Alaska for 23 years with the majority of that time here in Soldotna. I have been a nurse for over 30 years working at CPH for more than 10 in the OB department. I have been an active parent in the city and schools as a volunteer, coach, PTA president. In that time I have come to appreciate not only the great opportunities this state has to offer but also the great diversity of people that live here. I believe that people should be accepted for who they are and have the right to their own opinions. The City Councils' job is to listen to those opinions and make decisions based on the majority of the people that voted for them to serve.
I believe the City Council has strayed from that lately and I would like to help get them back on track. I believe I can come to the City Council with an open mind and am willing to listen.
The youth of Soldotna would like to be able to have a place where they can gather. This idea has been approached in the past, but as yet not happened. There are many opportunities for our youth to stay busy and become involved, but I do agree that a possible "rec" center would be a great place for them to meet. Having a place, outside of school, allows teens to get to know each other and find those with like interests to participate in the many things that are available to them here on the Kenai Peninsula.
Sixty-three percent of the people of Soldotna have given an advisory vote on having a memorial cemetery on city owned, West Redoubt Street. Two previous task forces also recommended that location. Why then is the City of Soldotna spending money on buying land in another area? This is an indication to me that the majority vote doesn't matter to the current City Council. I believe the majority of people have a right to have their vote counted.
These are just two examples of why I would like to run for City Council. It's time for some fresh new ideas and fresh faces. I appreciate and need your vote October 6th.
