Council decisions reflect whole community
As the City of Soldotna election nears, I would like to reflect on our cities current state and our future. To those of us who grew up elsewhere and moved to Soldotna later, this community is a breath of fresh air. The people are warm and friendly, the schools and parks are outstanding. It is an overall upbeat and progressive community. Many times we need to take a step away to appreciate what we have. I will say, and have said too many people that Soldotna was the best thing that happened to my family and I. For that I hope to be able to return this to the city by public service.
Our city faces many challenges in its immediate future and will require thought and a lot of deliberation before quick decisions can be made. Some of these things are: annexation, sales tax revenue drop and parks development to name a few. I hope all the current candidates can look at the big picture and not focus on one issue. To some it's become a feeling of "not being heard". The Soldotna cemetery is the banner issue for many residents. I have first hand knowledge of the issue and hope to be part of the solution. I feel you can be heard even though the city may choose another direction. I like to think the city council did listen to the whole community, not just the vocal people on either side. I strongly believe they looked at many options and chose the best one. It is not an easy choice but one that is best for the city and its residents. Too often, it is portrayed as winners or losers. Too often the word "compromise" is rejected without effort. Even if a majority may feel one direction is right, should the others just be ignored? Shouldn't those greatest affected by issues have a say in their own future? In the past, city councils that have seen both sides had done an excellent job for our community. Economically and emotionally people feel better if they feel they have a say in their future. In regards to a Soldotna Cemetery, the city council has looked at the big picture, viewed by many eyes and opinions. The votes were listened to and heard. In an attempt to reconcile our city, they sought a compromise solution that works well. No winners or losers. If you take a close look at the facts surrounding the cemetery issue and remove your personal bias, their compromise site is better than the original. They were able to find a solution for all. To continue to re-open the debate and force an issue that has been decided serves no useful purpose. This continued debate can only postpone or stop the cemetery forever.
As you approach the ballot booth in October, please don't let this be a one issue election. Soldotna has other issues that are just as important. Choose wisely and know, either way your voice will be heard.
