George W. Bush and Al Gore might not be watching voter turnout in today's Kenai Peninsula Borough regular municipal election, but 37 peninsula residents running for office are counting on friends and neighbors to be at the right place at the right time.
There are six borough assembly candidates, five school board contenders, three Kenai City Council wannabes, two Seward City Council hopefuls, two Soldotna residents running for city council and 19 candidates for service area boards.
Then there are the proponents and opponents of three borough propositions, a city of Seward proposition and the possible creation of a new Greater Kachemak Volunteer Fire and Emergency Medical Service Area.
The borough has 31 precincts and polling places. According to Sherry Biggs, the borough's deputy clerk, provisions have been made to accommodate a wide range of possible voter needs. Considera-tion is even given to individuals who make mistakes on their ballot and want to start over, as long as it doesn't happen more than three times.
"Voting is a right," Biggs said. "There's someone available to help if the voter is disabled, handicapped, has difficulty reading or writing, or for any other reason."
Answers to questions or requests for more information can be directed to the clerk's office at 262-8608 or (800) 478-4441, ext. 308.
