Seahawks secure final GLC playoff spot

The Seward football team wrapped up second place in the Great Land Conference Saturday with a 15-8 victory over Nikiski in Seward.

The Seahawks finished the regular season at 5-1 in the conference and 6-2 overall. The Bulldogs finished at 3-3 in the conference and 3-5 overall.

The game was played in steady showers. Seward co-coach Mark Woodward said the field did not become that bad until the fourth quarter, when he started calling plays based on weather the ball was spotted in a puddle or not.

All of the scoring happened in the first half. Seward's Charlie Rininger put the Seahawks up 7-0 in the first quarter when he caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Coty Beck.

Nikiski immediately answered in the first quarter when Zech Hemphill scored on a 3-yard run. The Bulldogs got the two-point conversion to take an 8-7 lead.

Seward took the lead for good when Isaac Swiderski scored on a 1-yard run with 6:02 left in the first half.

After that, the teams started to struggle with the field conditions.

"It started raining at 5 o'clock this morning," Woodward said. "A couple of times, there was a big downpour. It really didn't affect things until the fourth quarter."

The Bulldogs rolled up 207 yards on the ground, but were done in by turnovers and costly penalties. Nikiski had three interceptions and two fumbles.

"Seward's a good football team," Nikiski coach Ned Clooten said. "We made way too many mistakes to win the football game."

The Seahawks, who managed to pass for 111 yards in the rainy conditions, committed two interceptions and one turnover.
