Nikiski netters make final six

The Nikiski volleyball team did the best of any peninsula unit Friday and Saturday at the West Spiketacular in Anchorage, making it to the final six teams. The other five teams were all Anchorage squads — West, Service, Dimond, South and East.

In Friday pool play, the Bulldogs finished 7-5 with wins over Service, Grace Christian and Soldotna, losses to East and South and a split with Class 3A rival Valdez.

Nikiski finished second in that pool and got the No. 4 seed overall for Saturday's action.

In Saturday's double-elimination tournament, Nikiski defeated Bartlett 25-23, 25-23 before losing to Dimond 23-25, 25-15, 16-14. In the loser's bracket, Nikiski defeated SoHi 25-10, 25-21 and Grace 25-21, 25-21 before losing 25-16, 25-20 to East.

Hannah Thompson and Amber Huhndorf made the all-tournament team for Nikiski.

The Bulldogs played most of the tournament without hitter Georgie Heaverley, who was lost in Game 3 of the tournament with an ankle injury. Coach Bruce King said Kyla Jorgensen did a good job filling in for Heaverley, getting more and more comfortable in her role as the tournament wore on.

Nikiski hosts Skyview Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
