Anti-smoking program begins today

"The Challenge," a government program to get 10 students to stop smoking for 30 days, will begin today with its first weekly meeting. Experts will be on hand and information will be provided. Everything is confidential. For more information, call 283-2057.

Help on financial issues offered

Representatives from the Alaska Division of Investments and the Alaska Business Development Center will be in Homer today from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. They will be in Soldotna today from noon to 5 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Community and Economic Development office. They will be in Seward from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the Alaska Vocational Technical Center.

The representatives will provide assistance to commercial harvesters with loan extensions, tax obligations, loan applications and any financial or loan issues or needs. For more information, call (800) 478-5626 or (800) 478-3474.

Candidates to address chamber

The Kenai Chamber of Commerce will hold its weekly luncheon at noon today at Paradisos Restaurant. District 9 candidates Hal Smalley, James Price and Mike Chenault and Senate candidates Sen. Jerry Ward and Mike Szymanski will speak. For more information, call 283-7989.

Chamber luncheon will feature candidate forum

The North Peninsula Chamber of Commerce will hold its weekly luncheon at noon at the Lighthouse Inn on Thursday. There will be a candidate forum; the public is welcome to attend. For more information, call 283-4202.

Presentation on child development offered

Dr. Carole Buchholz will give a presentation on child development and kindergarten readiness at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Soldotna Cooperative Preschool in the Christ Lutheran Church on Soldotna Lane. For more information, call 262-1298.

Historical society to meet

The Soldotna Historical Society will hold its monthly board of directors meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the museum on Centennial Road. It is open to the public.

Computer classes offered

PCI Skills Resource Center offers the following courses: Intro to computers (students schedule classes); Quickbooks 2000 (Monday); Windows 98/Office 97 (Tuesday, Wednesday); Excel (Oct. 16, 17); Quickbooks 2000 (Oct. 23-26).

Soldotna artist's work on display

The work of Soldotna artist Connie Goltz is now on exhibit at the Kenai Fine Arts Center. The exhibit, which includes fiber art, quilting, bead work, buttons and other artwork, will be on display through October.

The center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
