Community support just ducky for annual race, say Kenai Lions

Posted: Wednesday, October 04, 2000

On behalf of all the Kenai Lions and the many local individuals who benefit from the numerous service projects sponsored by our club, this letter is to thank everyone who "adopted" a duck during our Ninth Annual Rubber Ducky Race which was Sept. 16 at Cunningham Park on the Kenai River.

Because of this tremendous community support, our club is able to sponsor such projects as the handicapable renovations at the Kenai Municipal Park on Forest Drive and building a "warming shed" at the multi-purpose ice rink in Kenai. We also donated funds to the purchase of mobile blood banks on the Kenai Peninsula, purchased safety lights for elementary school-age children during Halloween, provided eyeglasses for children whose parents cannot afford them in an ongoing program and sponsored a Little League team.

Congratulations to Joan Schrader who won $6,000; Rose Cowens who won $1,000; and to the 10 $100 winners: Jan Daniels, Paul Gray, Columbia Paint, Charlie Ross, Kenai Peninsula Food Bank, Mary Alfano, Rick Baldwin, Jim Howard, Sam Brown and the Binkley Girls.

And, finally, we would like also to give a special thanks to the several local individuals and businesses who donated $100 to sponsor a duck in the "business" race: Alaska Speech and Language Clinic; Arby's; Best Transit Mix; Big Kmart; Brown Agency; Davis Block; Dean's Peninsula Printing; Don Jose's Mexican Restaurant of Kenai; First American Title; First National Bank of Anchorage-Kenai (race winner); Frames & Things; The Haircutters; J.D.'s Professional Assistance; Kenai Chrysler Center; Kenai Golf Course; Kenai Merit Inn; Kenai Peninsula Racing Lions; Kenai Vision Center; Mikunda - Cottrell, C.P.A.; Mollys Flower Factory-Blakeley's Auction; Morgan Steel; National Bank of Alaska, Kenai; Peninsula Clarion; Peninsula Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic; Penny's Travel; Peterkin Distributors; Phil Nash, Attorney at Law; Quick Delivery; Radio Shack-Kenai and Soldotna; Reel Alaska Guide Service; Robert J. Molloy, Attorney at Law; Soldotna Lions; State Farm Insurance, and Sterling Court Reporters. It is because of the generosity of these folks that this fund-raiser has become so successful. We thank you all.
