Pastors also need prayers, support

"How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!" -- Isaiah 52:7

"Many godly pastors have shared with us their frustrations, even the temptation of quitting the ministry," said Rev. Billy Graham.

"No segment of our society is more strategic and more in need of prayer than pastors and their families. They urgently and desperately need our love, encouragement and earnest prayers," said Bill Bright, founder and president of Campus Crusade for Christ.

"To have a company of people who regularly intercede in prayer on your behalf is not only empowering, but uplifting. Please pray for your pastor," said Rev. H. B. London Jr., of Pastor to Pastors, Focus on the Family.

Pastors are under attack today as never before. That is why it is so important to hold them up in prayer. But unless they have requests or are aware of specific needs their pastors have, many people do not know what to pray for on a regular basis for them.

Pastors aren't prone to giving their people specific requests. Is this because we have set a high standard of expectation for them, not allowing them to have real needs in their life? Believe me, they have them.

I would like to take the opportunity to encourage you to show your appreciation for our communities' clergy by joining me in prayer for them.

Here is a very simple but practical strategy of prayer that we can use:

Monday -- Pastor's family: God's peace and protection, a growing love relationship with their spouse and a commitment to quality and quantity time together;

Tuesday -- Pastor's wisdom: the mind of Christ, godly decision-making and understanding of biblical truth;

Wednesday -- Pastor's ministry focus: a clear vision and commitment to biblical priorities and to remain true to their God-given gifts and strengths;

Thursday -- Pastor's health: protection of their body and mind, an extra portion of stamina and strength and a commitment to stress-releasing activities;

Friday -- Pastor's spiritual growth: a heart for God and the lost, fresh biblical insights and personal devotions not related to sermon preparation;

Saturday -- Pastor's purity: pure motives, pure thought, pure life, faithfulness to their spouse and pure commitment to complete integrity;

Sunday -- God's anointing on pastor: strength in leadership, passion in their preaching and fruit and joy in their ministry.

Why not take time to send your pastors a card or note to let them know that you appreciate them and have committed to pray for them this month?

I believe these people will feel encouraged just knowing they are being prayed for.

Better yet, I believe we can expect to see results as we join together in prayer to uphold and support our area clergy and pastors.
