Roaring success

Lion Sharen Sleater recently was named Lion of the Year by the Soldotna Lions Club. She received her award from Past President Tim Musgrove. Sleater was selected in recognition of her support of the club's many community service projects.

Marolf joins Coast Guard

Coast Guard Fireman Dutchess K. Marolf recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J.

During the eight-week program, Marolf completed a vigorous training curriculum consisting of academics and practical instruction on water safety and survival, military customs and courtesies, seamanship skills, first aid, fire fighting and marksmanship. A major emphasis also is placed on physical fitness, health and wellness.

Recruits also received instruction on the Coast Guard's core values-honor, respect and devotion to duty and how to apply them in their military performance and personal conduct.

She is the daughter of Jane C. and Fred Marolf of Seward and a 2004 graduate of Seward High School.

Her grandparents are Linda McNair and Robert McNair, both of Kenai, and Eileen and Richard Haeg of Collegeville, Minn.
