Holliston, Mass., resident Roderick B. Spurr died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at the Milford Regional Hospital in Milford, Mass., following a battle with cancer. He was 75.
Services were held Monday, Oct. 3 at the George F. Doherty and Sons Funeral Home in Wellesley, Mass. The Rev. Robert Fredrickson officiated. He was buried at Lake Grove Cemetery in Holliston.
Mr. Spurr was born Sept. 28, 1930 in Beverly, Mass., to Edwin B. and Doris M. (Hanson) Spurr.
He married Catherine E. (Pitman) Spurr on June 1, 1957 at Grace Episcopal Church in Newton, Mass.
"He was a 40-year resident of the town of Holliston and veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served in the Korean War. He enjoyed playing the piano and was an avid reader, especially of Charles Dickens novels and Civil War books. He also was a respected and admired teacher of mathematics in the Wellesley Public School system for 37 years," his family said.
Mr. Spurr was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin B. and Doris M. (Hanson) Spurr; sister, Marilyn A. Spurr; and grand father, Roderick B. Hanson.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine E. (Pitman) Spurr of Holliston; daughters, Alison K. Spurr of Holliston and Holly C. Flynn of Sterling; granddaughter, Kristen H. Schuler of Worcester, Mass.; and grandson, Jeffrey D. Schuler of Holliston.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made in his name to Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, c/o MGH Development Office, 100 Charles River Plaza, Suite 600, Boston, MA 02114.
Arrangements were made by George F. Doherty and Sons Funeral Home in Wellesley.
