Coast Guard, Fish and Game to inspect crab fleet

Posted: Thursday, October 05, 2000

KODIAK (AP) -- The Coast Guard and the state Department of Fish and Game will be inspecting the crab fleet at Dutch Harbor for possible safety violations.

The inspections will run from Sunday through Oct. 15, or immediately prior to the start of the Bristol Bay Red King Crab season.

The Coast Guard will board vessels at the dock to examine their stability and pot loading practices.

The Coast Guard asks that stability instructions and books be available for examination during Fish and Game's tank inspection in order to speed things. Although a Coast Guard boarding is not required, tank inspections by Fish and Game officials are mandatory before vessels can depart for the fishing grounds.

Coast Guard personnel will be available to conduct dockside examinations and to offer water survival, life raft boarding and damage control training.
