ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is awarding the Alaska Department of Fish and Game $9.52 million for salmon habitat restoration and recovery programs.
The funding is $2.2 million more than originally planned.
NOAA's initial formula for the disbursementof $36 million in Pacific salmon recovery funds would have given Alaska $7.3 million. At the request of Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, the agency reviewed its funding formula to recognize the importance of salmon fisheries in Alaska.
The $9.52 million is the second installment of funding provided to the state for salmon habitat restoration this year. The previous payment was $10 million.
Other states receiving funding for Pacific salmon recovery are California, Oregon and Washington.
