Once again, the Kenai Central High School Homecoming James Martin Memorial Scholarship Bar-B-Que was a success. Despite the rain, $997 was raised for the fund.
Thank you everyone who purchased the meal. It was also exciting to have people not attending the game drop by to eat because they were listening to the game over KSRM and heard the announcement. One young lady said she was in the class of ’88 and remembered James.
At the time of his death, James was raising a steer for the 4-H Market Livestock Program. The local McDonald’s stores organized a fundraiser for this steer, and it was used for the first barbecue.
The next year and every year since, Unocal purchased a hog to support the barbecue. This year Unocal/Chevron continued the tradition of going to the auction at the Kenai Peninsula State Fair at Ninilchik and purchasing a hog.
We take this opportunity to thank these companies as well as Fred Sturman for providing one of the cookers, KCHS staff for bringing out the tables and 4-Her Caleb Daniels for helping to serve his hog. Also helping Carrol Martin were Dan Roemar and Ronna, Blair, DeAnne, Josiah, Matti, Darius and Sonora Martin.
