The Wenatchee Wild defeated the Kenai River Brown Bears 5-3 on Sunday in North American Hockey League play in the state of Washington.
The Brown Bears are now 2-9-1 overall and are in last place in the West Division. The Wild lead the division with a 12-2 record.
All of Kenai River's games have been on the road thus far. The Brown Bears open their home schedule on Friday with a 7:30 p.m. game against Bismarck at the Soldotna Sports Center.
Wenatchee outshot the Brown Bears 41-14 in the first two periods, taking a 5-2 lead. Kenai River's goals came from Mike Greene, on assists from Jake Musselman and Derek Bayagich, and Doug Beck, on assists from Josh Royston and Dajon Mingo.
Kenai River head coach Marty Quarters said he is proud of his team for coming back in the third period. The Brown Bears were outshot 13-11 in the final 20 minutes. Dajon Mingo, on an assist from Musselman, had a goal just 1 minutes, 56 seconds, into the final frame.
"We took it to them in the third period," Quarters said via cell phone from Washington. "We hit two posts."
Quarters said he is especially pleased with the line of Mingo, Jed McGlasson and Josh Royston.
"They were close to unstoppable all weekend, especially in that third period," he said.
Mike Martin started in goal for Kenai River, yielding five goals on 32 shots, before Jimmy Hamby came on to turn away all 22 shots he saw.
"It wasn't his fault," Quarters said of Martin. "Once Hamby came on, the ice leveled out.
"Then in the third period, we were able to tilt the ice in our favor."
Quarters said one thing he likes about the Brown Bears is that they have improved every game, and are playing 10 times better than at the beginning of the season.
