First-grade parents are encouraged to help their first-grader with reading by having have them read the words and sentences to you from the reading worksheet papers that come home from school. These worksheets are the sounds and words the students have been working on that day in school and they also match the sound-spelling cards that have been introduced. Some students may need extra practice with this and by working together at home and school it will make things much easier for the student.

Mr. Daniel's class had a double field trip day. They went to the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and extended their learning about bears in Alaska by learning about issues surrounding bear-human interaction and bear biology. They also went roller-skating with the whole school. Next week the class will begin an in-depth study of earthquakes and volcanoes. The students will have a live video conference with a volcanic geologist from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. They also will build volcano models and take a closer look at local geology.
