Stars take Silver Division at Spiketacular

The Soldotna High School girls volleyball team won first place in the Silver Division of the West Spiketacular Friday and Saturday at West High School in Anchorage. Juniors Rachel Besse and Hillary Zobeck were named to the All Tournament team.

Sixteen teams participated, including West, Dimond, Palmer, Chugiak, Colony, Wasilla, East, Soldotna, Lathrop, Su Valley, Bartlett, Houston, North Pole, Heritage and Valdez. The tournament featured round robin pool play in which the Stars won 10 out of 14 games against seven opponents in the Silver Division. Soldotna defeated North Pole, Bartlett, Houston and Susitna Valley on its way to downing Lathrop 15-6, 15-10 in the Silver Division title game.

Coach Pako Whannell said her Stars were gelling as a team.

"The girls worked well as a team on the court with their communication, defense and attack on the offense," Whannell said. "All in all, it was a great effort by all the Stars on the court and on the bench. The girls were fired up and ready to play. Everyone did their part to make this weekend a successful one."

Stacey Foster finished the tournament with 62 assists as the Stars' setter.

Rachel Besse was the prime beneficiary of those sets with 36 kills while Hillary Zobeck notched 32 for the tournament and Ashley Duwe had 12.

Besse was a force at the net with 24 blocks while Zobeck hit 14 ace serves. Lauren Christensen, Duwe and Jenna Pitts each had seven aces.

The Stars hustled on defense with Pitts digging out 35 balls. Zobeck had 29 digs, Duwe has 26, Foster was good for 19, Tabitha Strauss and Christensen had 16 apiece and Christa Martin finished with 14 digs.

The Stars had 56 team saves.
