Nurse-midwives recognized with awareness week

Posted: Monday, October 07, 2002

Nurse-midwives in Soldotna and communities across the nation will be saluted this week during Nurse-Midwifery Week.

Nurses, physicians, clients and the general public will celebrate the contributions certified nurse-midwives and certified midwived make to the health and well-being of women and families.

The theme for the week, "With Women For a Lifetime" acknowledges the important role midwives play in women's lives, whether assisting a woman as she gives birth or providing personalized well-woman health care.

The rising rates of Cesarean sections and domestic violence are among the reasons the American College of Nurse-Midwives and its more than 7,000 nurse-midwife members have begun Nurse-Midwifery Week.

This year's campaign is designed to educate women on the entire range of services nurse-midwives offer and have been offering for more than 70 years in America.

The campaign also seeks to educate women and families about the many misperceptions about midwives and empower women to take charge of their health and seeks all the facts when making a decision.
